Introduction

These cheeky little monkeys are known for their funny and protective antics. Affenpinschers get their name from the German word Affe meaning ‘ape’ because of their distinct, monkey-like expression!

They are a rare breed with a unique temperament. Even though they have gained popularity in the UK and the US, they are still pretty hard to come by. It’s easy to see why this pooch is in such high demand; they are quick-witted and easy to train, loyal and curious. You’ll find it hard not to fall head over paws with an Affen!

History

Affens were originally bred in Germany back in the 1600s. They were a working dog, used to rid stables of pesky rodents. Later on, they were brought indoors to catch domestic pests too. This is worth considering if you have a hamster or gerbil - they are not going to be the best of friends!

Over time, Affens were bred to be companion dogs. German breeders began to miniaturize them, and they gained popularity amongst noble ladies. This saw the birth of the small, loveable Affenpinschers we see today.

Personality

This dog may be small in size, but it certainly makes up for that in its personality. In France, Affens are known as “moustached little devils” - due to their trademark ‘stache and fearless nature. Affens are loyal to their owners, and aren’t afraid to bark at strangers! Don’t mistake these pooches for being ‘devilish’; they are incredibly friendly and love to be around other doggy friends and humans. They’re also very smart and quick-witted and are never short of providing entertainment. Owners often say that the little monkeys learn how to make their owner laugh, and will continue to repeat these behaviours to their amusement. It’s not surprising that they rank 37th on the world's smartest dog scale! (pethelpful). Curious, full of energy and comedic, you’ll never be bored with an Affen around!
