Introduction

Cairn Terriers are known for being one of the original Terrier breeds in Scotland and were used in hunting practices. Even the name ‘Cairn’ is the Scottish word for ‘rock den’, which is where prey like foxes and badgers would live. These brave pups would dive into the holes to chase them out!

Nowadays, now that such hunting practices are illegal, Cairn Terriers make for the ideal companion pups as they are loyal and affectionate but are also highly intelligent. This means playtime is a lot of fun, as long as you’re willing to make your dog a valued member of your family.

History

As an original Scottish breed, it’s not surprising that records of the Cairn Terrier date back as far as the 15th Century, which is when they were used in their hunting practices. However, the breed was often confused and similarly identified as being the same as other Scottish breeds like the West Highland Terrier and the Scottish Terrier.

It wasn’t until the early 1900s when the breeds were property identified separately. Soon after, in 1913, the American Kennel Club identified the breed properly, and popularity started to spread across mainly the Western world. Nowadays, Cairn Terriers make for fantastic companion household dogs loved by all!

Personality

The loyalty trait of the Cairn Terrier is what makes it shine. Once you introduce this pup to your family and train it well, there’s no stopping the amount of love and affection they have to give. Playful and loving, Cairn Terriers love nothing more than being at your side, being active with you, and enjoying life.

However, the working dog background does mean that assertive training is needed from a young age. Letting your Cairn Terrier get out of hand can create a very loud, endlessly barking, destructive pup that will run you riot. However, since they are so intelligent, firm training and practising tricks, etc, from a young puppy age can be the best way to curb these potential behaviours.
