Introduction

There’s no denying that Foxhounds are some of the most amazing and most beautiful dogs in the world that have been living alongside humans for a very long time. While these aren’t the most traditional household and companionship dogs out there and are more commonly used as working dogs, that’s not to say they don’t exist, and there’s certainly a demand out there.

History

Foxhounds originated in the United Kingdom and have a history that goes back centuries with records suggesting this could even be as far back as the 1700s. They were bred with working in mind, carrying out tasks like hunting foxes and, well, that’s pretty much it, as the name suggests.

However, due to their high intelligence and outstanding agility skills, Foxhounds have commonly appeared in dog shows over the years and still do to this day. They were bred originally by crossing Fox Terriers with English Bulldogs!

Personality

This may surprise some owners, but even though Foxhounds are born and bred hunting dogs, they do get exceptionally well with children and other animals. Foxhounds are incredibly gentle beings once they’ve been given the right training, although they can be a bit apprehensive around strangers, especially as they get older.

What’s more, Foxhounds do have a bit of a stubborn streak in them, meaning they will try and push their boundaries to see what they can get away with, but again, firm yet gentle training can be enough to keep the dog well behaved and doing what it should do!
