Introduction

Smaller than a greyhound, the Italian greyhound offers the same sleek, athletic, beautiful looks in a package that’s small enough to adapt to apartment living. Sweet-natured and people-oriented, the Italian greyhound is a popular companion dog and family pet where children are older, happy to spend its day doing whatever its people are doing, and then snuggling up on the sofa in the evening.

History

It’s believed by some that the origins of the Italian greyhound may stretch back as far as Ancient Egypt with mummified remains of dogs discovered in the tombs of Pharaohs appearing to match the breed. Images found in the frescoes of Pompeii also show Italian greyhound-like dogs, but their exact ancestry remains unknown. By the Middle Ages, Italian greyhounds had become popular companions in the homes of wealthy Italians and images of them can be seen in numerous paintings and sculptures from this time in history.

Personality

Gentle, affectionate, and cheerful dogs, Italian Greyhounds make great companions. They are very loving and at their happiest when they’re with their people, meaning they don’t like to be left alone for long periods. They get on well with children, but they prefer a quieter, calmer home environment. As sight hounds, the family cat will be on the chase radar, so this can be an issue, and while running free for short bursts of unbridled speed will make an Italian greyhound’s day, they need to be kept on a lead in public places to avoid any kind of unwanted chase taking place.
