Introduction

The American Cocker Spaniel is one of the most popular dog breeds to exist. It was the breed of choice in America for two decades, and today it remains in the top 15 breeds. This fluffy little pooch is easily identified due to its trademark floppy ears.

‘Lady,’ the main character in the Disney film ‘Lady and the Tramp’ is a renowned American Cocker Spaniel, and her elegant and gentle character is representative of this much-loved pup.

History

The history of the American Cocker Spaniel dates back to the renaissance era. The name is made up of Cocker, as the breed was used to hunt woodcock birds in England, and Spaniel, which accounts for its Spanish heritage. It was bred to be a hunting dog, making it an agile breed. This is worth bearing in mind when you take your Spaniel on a walk - a lead is essential in public places!

The Spaniel arrived in America with Pilgrims in 1620 on the Mayflower ship. The classic Cocker Spaniel and the American version began to differentiate from this point, with American breeders focusing on breeding smaller and solid-coloured cockers in contrast to the British, who bred bigger, mixed-coloured cockers that were more suited to hunting.

Personality

This breed is a consistent tail-wagger who loves to be included in fun activities and hates being left alone for too long. These dogs adore people and have been used as therapy dogs for this reason. They certainly live up to their nickname of ‘Merry Cocker’! Their soft and gentle temperament makes them ideal pets for a household that can treat them with lots of love care.
