A large and distinctive breed, the Otterhound is not that common. Originally bred to hunt otters, they are happy on land and in water and best suited to a countryside lifestyle.

They are a pretty energetic dog and require reasonably specialist management because of their size and hunting heritage. Their breeding means they love to spend time in the water so a riverside or beach home is the perfect location.

The Otterhound can trace its ancestry back to the 12th century. No records exist from this time about how the breed came about but experts think there is influence from the Basset Griffon Vendee, the Bloodhound and the St Hubert Hound.

Bred to have lightning-quick reactions and to be able to hunt on land and in water, Otterhounds were highly prized by the nobility. Speed on land was matched with agility in the water with their webbed feet, one of the few canine breeds with this characteristic. Now, they are a scarce breed with the driver to breed them – otter hunting – a thing of the past in the UK.

Sweet and affectionate, this is a fun-loving breed, something of a clown so whilst playful and kind, they are not best suited to families with very small children. Because of their size and boisterous nature, early and firm training is essential. Their innate personality is soft and affectionate but they can have a bit of a stubborn streak. They need lots of exercise and have immense stamina so you will never be able to wear out an Otterhound.

The Otterhound has a distinctive and beautiful voice - often referred to as hound music - but not always what you might want in an urban area.
