Introduction

The Asian Shorthair is also known as the Malayan and is an affectionate and engaging character with all the lovable traits and attributes of their near relative, the Burmese. Social and engaging, this breed enjoys huge popularity and fits in well to a variety of different home environments.

History

The Asian Shorthair evolved in the 1980s from a breeding programme led by Baroness Miranda von Kirchberg and this started with an accidental mating between a Chinchilla Persian and a Burmese. The kittens were so attractive that it was decided to embark upon a planned breeding programme. Initially known as Burmillas, the Baroness started the Burmilla Association and forty years later, this breed is now officially known as the Asian Shorthair and has a loyal and dedicated fan club.

The Asian Shorthair is recognised by the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy in the UK but is still quite a rare breed in America and lacks any formal approval. The cats appear rather like a Burmese but with a rounded and more open expression inherited from the Persian Chinchilla. They have a sparkling silver coat and very distinctive make up around the nose, eyes and lips. The Asian Shorthair has a sibling, the Asian Semi-Longhaired, which is a true semi-longhair sporting a fine silky coat.

Personality

Extrovert, engaging, mischievous, affectionate – how many superlatives can be used about the Asian Shorthair – this breed has inherited the best characteristics of both its parents in terms of appearance and character.

Make no mistake, this is a chatty cat who speaks when spoken to and is very people-orientated. They are tactile and love affection and cuddles. They are a playful breed and like company, cat toys and plenty of stimulation. The Asian Short hair does make a good companion to other cats and friendly dogs so can be left but they dislike solitude.
