Introduction

The Toy breed of dog is very popular throughout the UK, and the English Toy Terrier is a prime example of what makes these pooches so great. While these dogs are known for being fairly rare (and are actually listed as one of the UK’s most vulnerable breeds), there are few reasons why an English Toy Terrier would be good in your home. Fun-loving, affectionate, and eager to please, English Toy Terriers are simply great dogs.

History

Although many believe the English Toy Terrier is a new breed, the truth is that they’ve been around since before the 16th Century when hunters would actually carry these dogs around in their pockets. Once the prey was nearly captured, these dogs would spring out to finish flushing them out or bringing them back. English Toy Terriers were even used for rat pitting.

However, English Toy Terriers slowly became companionship dogs as hunting and killing sports were phased out, and by 1920, the UK Kennel Club split up the Toy breed into multiple bloodlines, and by 1960, English Toy Terriers were official dogs of their own kind.

Personality

Easily the best traits of the English Toy Terrier is the fact they’re so intelligent and curious about the world around them, which certainly comes from their hunting and flushing heritage. As long as you’re training your pup from a young age and teaching them where the boundaries are, you shouldn’t have a problem integrating these dogs into your family.

However, English Toy Terriers can be a little stubborn from time to time, meaning you need to be assertive, and they can get very bored easily, especially when left alone. This means they can start exploring, barking, or wandering off, which is why it’s so important that you keep an eye on them.
