Introduction

One of the rare dog breeds to come from Scotland, Deerhounds were at one point referred to as the Royal Dog of Scotland, since only royals and noble people at the time were allowed to own them. However, due to changes in working dog requirements over the years, and the ceasing of hunting practices altogether, the Deerhound numbers are very low and these pups are very rare in the UK, and indeed the world.

History

It’s to pinpoint the exact origins of the Deerhound because they’re that old. Some reports date them back to the Middle Ages, whereas others claim they were used as hunting dogs as far back as the 3rd Century. The clearest references date back to the 15th Century, which is where most people will start their trip back in time.

During the 15th Century was the time when plenty of Deerhound-like dogs existed, such as the Greyhound, the Scotch Greyhounds, and several more. Unfortunately, the styles of hunting changed around the 19th Century and different breeds were used, causing the Deerhound numbers to drop dramatically, and while there are efforts to increase numbers, these dogs are still fairly rare to this day.

Personality

Deerhounds are known for their gentle attitudes and within their family, they wouldn’t even hurt a fly, but they require a ton of socialisation training to be accepting of people outside the family, towards other dogs and pets, and just strangers in general, and you need to keep this level of assertive training up over the years.

Because of this reason, training can be hard work and you’re not guaranteed to get it right all the time, which could be another reason why Deerhound numbers are sadly dropping. In short, if you’re willing to put the time in and invest in a proper relationship, then the payoff can be huge, but it’s known to be a struggle to get there.
