Introduction

The Westiepoo is a West Highland Terrier crossed with a Miniature or Toy Poodle, creating an active, intelligent, and loving all-rounder that loves to be at the heart of family life. People-oriented and affectionate, they love to be involved in everything, and at the end of a busy and active day, they’ll snuggle up on the sofa with the family to watch TV.

History

The Westiepoo’s origins are unknown, but like other “designer dogs” and popular hybrids, the first intentional mix was most likely in the 1990s and in North America, although it’s a combination of breeds that no doubt existed in mongrels previously. The West Highland Terrier has origins dating back to the 1400s in Scotland, and the Poodle’s origins date to the same period in history in Germany.

Personality

The combination of the West Highland Terrier’s affectionate, outgoing personality and the Poodle’s intelligence and energy creates a super-sociable bundle of fun that makes the Westiepoo an increasingly popular family pet and companion. Both parents are active breeds and this is seen in the Westiepoo’s need for exercise and entertainment, but in a suitably busy and interactive home environment, they are charming, playful, clever little dogs that offer, fun, friendship, and undying loyalty.

Health Issues as a hybrid breed, the Westiepoo is less susceptible to hereditary conditions that can affect its purebred parents. Patellar luxation can be an issue in small dog breeds.
Care Tips Westiepoos are relatively low maintenance in terms of grooming, but companionship needs are high. Grooming: a twice-weekly brush is generally enough to keep coats looking good, but daily may be needed if a longer coat has been inherited. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: a minimum of 45 minutes of exercise each day split into two walks is needed, but ideally an hour or more with as much free time to play in a secure garden as possible. Westiepoos are lively and intelligent and need mental stimulation as well as physical exercise to keep them happy and out of mischief.
