Introduction

A handsome breed, the Abyssinian is an extroverted and intelligent cat, popular for its good nature and appealing appearance. Also called the "Clowns of the cat kingdom" for their interest in play and their curiosity.

History

The story of the Abyssinian cat starts when they are first thought to have been bred in Abyssinia, now modern-day Ethiopia, and were brought back to Britain by soldiers who had purchased kittens from a local trader. In actuality, while the cat can trace its roots back to north Africa, they were developed in Britain after Lord Robert Napier brought them back after a military expedition to Abyssinia. Lord Robert Napier apparently so loved his cat's coat pattern that he bred the cat several times to keep the pattern going. Thus the breed was born! Zulu, Lord Robert Napiers cat, is now considered the first of the breed. Despite their popularity, though, the breed has nearly met its end several times. Both World Wars nearly decimated the breed in Europe, and then in the 1960s, the European members of the breed were almost destroyed by Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), but breeding with members from America and Canada saved the breed. The breed has now been firmly reestablished and remains popular around the world.

Personality

Extroverted and sweet, the Abyssinian is happy to live with children and other animals, although children should always be taught how to calmly interact with cats to reduce the possibility of injuries. An energetic and intelligent breed, they are happy to play on their own or to have interactive play with their human companions. As an intelligent breed, they need to be kept mentally stimulated to reduce boredom based problem behaviours.
