Introduction

Nicknamed ‘hog dogs,’ American bulldogs have gained a reputation for being tough and strong. Stocky in build, they are happiest when running around and warning off danger. You can expect stacks of energy and a friend for life when welcoming this pooch into your home.

History

When the colonists settled in the New World, they took their beliefs, their culture and their schools with them. They also took their British Bulldogs. They were a lifesaver for the working-class farmer, as these agile dogs fought off dangerous feral pigs. The American descendent of the British Bulldog became a staple for the farmers of the South.

During World War Two, the breed was near extinction. If it wasn’t for a man called John D. Johnson, they would likely cease to exist today. He started a breeding programme in the 1970s. There is now a type of American bulldog named after him in honour of his work, the Johnson American Bulldog. Thanks to him, these pooches are now safe from extinction.

Personality

American Bulldogs are a confident breed, and with the right amount of love and care they will fit into any family household. They aren’t as friendly to strangers as some breeds, and can be quite wary of them. Maturation takes a little longer than normal, so American Bulldogs remain puppy-like for longer.

If you are looking to purchase an American Bulldog, then it is important that you understand their need for love. If left alone for days at a time, they will become increasingly unhappy and aggressive. They are also far more suited to a house with a garden, as they are happiest with lots of space to run around and burn all their energy off!
