Introduction

Small in size but big in character is the American Hairless Terrier. It is the only hairless breed that originated in America, and its baldness makes it an ideal pet for allergy sufferers. You can also be sure that your pooch isn’t at risk of flea infestation.

History

These dogs descend from the common Rat Terrier, which was used in Tudor England to catch pesky rodents. They were shipped over to America where they became very popular due to their ability to efficiently kill. There is a recorded instance where owners of rat terriers would get together and place bets on whose dog would perform the best, and one apparently killed a whopping 2,500 in a single barn!

The creation of the hairless version of the Rat Terrier was actually a mistake. In 1972, a hairless rat terrier was born due to a rare genetic anomaly. In 2004 the breed was made official.

Personality

Full of life and adoration for their owner, the hairless branch of the Rat Terrier breed is guaranteed to raise alarm if it senses danger. It often shows preference to the human that gives it the most attention by following their every move. You may therefore compete with your family members to see who is crowned the Terrier’s favourite!

They can be territorial and protective over their human, so be sure to give it love in return or it will get upset.
