Eager to please and full of love, the American Water Spaniel is the perfect household dog. These pooches love the outdoors and are most at home when doggy paddling in a lake. They are the state dog of Wisconsin, where they were bred as hunting dogs.

Sadly, they are rare to come across with less than 3,000 believed to be around today. They rank just 166th out of 192 on the American Kennel Club (AKC) popularity rankings. If you are the proud owner of one then you can be sure you won’t come across others very often!

The clue is in the name: Water Spaniels were bred as hunting dogs to face the unique challenges of working in a cold, lake-dominated region. European immigrants in the 1800s relied on the curly-haired pooches to hunt waterfowl birds. Their high energy levels and eagerness ensure that they are suited to this role.

This breed shares similarities with their English and Irish ancestors as they are bursting with energy and love living in family households. Companionship is important to them and they shouldn’t be left alone for a long period. They are also quite laid-back and aren’t known for barking too much, so they are suited to apartment living too. You must make sure that you establish rules and tell this dog off when it’s necessary, as they can sometimes be stubborn!
