Introduction

A sweet-natured breed with an aptitude for play and companionship, the American Wirehair is a good family cat. As their name suggests, they were first developed in the US and have since spread across the US and Canada thanks to their sweet and playful natures. As a muscular breed, nutrition is important, especially when it comes to controlling their weight!

History

The first American wirehair was born in 1966 when a spontaneous mutation in their genetics caused a kitten in a litter of farm cats to have this breeds trademark wirehair. Adam, as the kitten had been named, was the only one in his litter with this distinctive fur type and went on to be the father of the breed, with all subsequent litters being able to trace their heritage back to him after he was sold to a breeder. Since then the breed has been slowly spreading out with it being a popular cat breed in the US and Canada. The breed can be rather difficult to obtain and is in some areas considered rare. This hasn't dampened its popularity however, and even in the UK, the breed has been sought after, despite some UK shows not recognising the breed or allowing it to be shown.

Personality

An easy-going cat this breed won't just have one "human" but will be attached to all members of their family. They are happy to entertain themselves and can adapt well to being left alone while their humans go out to work or education. However, as an athletic and intelligent breed, they need plenty of mental stimulation, and if they aren't getting enough they may decide that unsuitable items are toys- like TV controllers and blankets! As this breed isn't overly vocal, they make good companions for those living in blocks of flats or apartments. They tend to get on well with cat friendly dogs, but as they were originally working cats, they aren't a good choice for those with birds or other small mammals. Children and this breed can get on well, especially as the American Wirehair can be taught tricks, however the children need to be taught to be respectful to reduce the likelihood of accidental injuries.
