Introduction

No need to try hard to guess where the Australian Mist cat originates but the rather unusual description is a reflection of this unique feline’s marbled or spotted fur. An easy cat to care for unlike some other breeds, the Australian Mist will slide into a range of households and live happily in lots of different environments. Actually bred to be an indoor cat, the Australian Mist can go outside but might need supervision. A small, enclosed garden that is cat-safe is perfect.

History

First produced in 1977 by a Doctor Truda Straede, the driver for the breed was to create a cat that actually wanted to live indoors. Australia is known for its feral cats and the intent was to create a friendly sociable breed that would make an excellent house cat. First called the Spotted Mist, the name was changed in 1998 to reflect the huge variety of coat patterns that the breed could sport.

Because the Australian Mist is the first breed of cat to originate from Australia, it has become known as Australia’s national cat. It is a breed not that well known away from its native shores so there are only a few examples in America and no actual breeders and hardly any cats in the UK at all.

The breed came from a foundation of thirty cats that consisted of mixed breeds including Abyssinian, Burmese and some Domestic Shorthairs. This perhaps explains the diverse range of colours and patterns which are permitted within the Australian breed standard.

Personality

Bright and relaxed, this laid-back kitty will fit into lots of different households. Happy to be a lap cat, the focus is all on the personality and character of this loving breed. Very tolerant even of young children, the Australian Mist makes an excellent family pet. Energetic as kittens, they mature into quite a relaxed adult cat so don’t need huge amounts of space or a lot of mental stimulation so they also suit quieter households and are an excellent companion for an elderly owner.
