Introduction

This breed’s name is the biggest clue about it as Bambino means baby or little one in Italian and this is definitely a breed on the small side although it isn’t Italian. The Bambino has decidedly short legs plus a distinct lack of hair so the reference to a new born is easy to see. The Bambino is mixed hybrid breed that owes its descent to more than one influence. It is an expensive purchase at around £1,800 for a kitten.

History

The Bambino derives from a mix of the Sphynx cat which carries the hairless gene and the Munchkin cat with the short-legged gene – herald a nearly bald cat with short legs.

Make no mistake, the Bambino was a controversial breed from the off as some experts thought that the breeding mix could carry an increased chance of genetic health problems. The Bambino was only registered as breed in 2005 and despite its rather unique appearance, is becoming very popular.

The International Cat Association recognises the breed as ‘experimental’ only but the Cat Fanciers Association won’t recognise the Bambino at all as it believes they would be lending support to a breed which specifically encourages and is even prized for genetic abnormalities.

Personality

The Bambino is a happy and playful breed which may be small in stature but packs a powerful punch regardless. Endearing, affectionate and energetic, this is one sociable breed so is best suited to households that are busy and lively where there is lots of engagement and company. Bambinos are also great with children. However, because of their lack of hair, they do require special attention and protection from sunlight.
