Introduction

Just like other working hounds, the Black and Tan Coonhound is incredibly athletic and instinctive. Be careful when you are out in public with this pooch, as they will not hesitate to swiftly chase after animals they come across. Originally, they were bred to hunt racoons in America, but they are capable of hunting anything from deer and wolves to mountain lions and bears!

History

During the 18th century in America, huntsmen weren’t satisfied with their hunting dogs. The English Foxhounds they were using weren’t able to chase after prey fast enough. As a solution, breeders combined the Foxhound with a Bloodhound to create this agile and instinctive breed. From the late 1800s onwards, the Black and Tan Coonhound was the racoon hunting dog of choice in the American mountains. Official recognition came in 1945 when the American Kennel Club released a breed standard.

Personality

The Black and Tan Coonhound might be a natural hunter, but it is surprisingly mellow and friendly in temperament. They enjoy relaxing in their family home almost as much as they love running in the outdoors. If you live in a city centre with no access to a garden, this dog may not be ideal for you. As with other scent hounds, they need to have open places to explore. They are gentle and playful with children, but their independent nature means that it isn’t necessary to give them too much affection. Social interaction is important to them, though, and they will howl (rather than bark) when left alone for too long. Ultimately, this pooch will happily settle into most family homes, and it will reward you with loyalty and affection.
