Introduction

Intelligent, energetic and always alert, the Blue Lacy is a successful working herding and hunting dog. Whilst it used to be very uncommon to see one outside of its home state, Texas, the breed has now travelled across the USA and Canada and can even be found in some European countries. If you are considering purchasing a Blue Lacy, buy a leash as they will chase after animals in public. They are a suitable household pet however are not recommended for first-time dog owners.

History

The creators of this breed, the Lacy brothers, migrated from Kentucky to Texas to work on a ranch. It didn't take long for them to realise that their dogs were not well adapted to the Texan climate. They set out to make a hound that could move swiftly, sniff out prey and keep guard of their animals. By mixing the English Shepherd, the Greyhound and a Coyote, the brothers achieved their goal. The Blue Lacy has since become a staple racing dog in Texas, and it became the official state dog in 2005.

In the 19th century, as farm vehicles developed, the Blue Lacy faced extinction. The demand for them died down as they were no longer needed. However, dedicated breeding families ensured that this didn’t happen. The Blue Lacy is now a common companion pet, too.

Personality

Any owner of the Blue Lacy should never forget that it is a working and hunting dog. This means that they are happiest when they have a job to do, as they can release their energy. Therefore, they are suited to an owner who has the time to walk, or even jog, with them daily.

Stubbornness is in their nature, so it’s important to train them from an early age. If you fail to show this dog that you are in control, then they won’t listen to commands and will show you that they are in control! They only obey the people that they respect, meaning that they are aloof with strangers.
