Introduction

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is known for being one of the hardest working dogs in the world that have one of the most prominent ‘no-fear’ traits you’ll ever see in a dog. While they make fantastic companion dogs, there’s definitely the wild side to them, and you’ll frequently see them challenging others when they feel threatened, no matter how big the threat is!

That being said, Catahoula Leopard Dogs are extremely lovable and affectionate, and with the right degree of assertive training, you’ll never have to deal with any problems.

History

Catahoula Leopard Dogs are working dogs through and through. While their exact origins are unknown, there are plenty of records that show them herding cattle and specifically driving wild hogs into slaughterhouses, which just goes to show why they needed to be bred to be so fearless.

However, we do know they came from the US, and the breed even became the state dog for Louisiana in 1979. That’s how iconic and engrained in the US’s working culture the Catahoula Leopard Dog is.

Personality

Despite their fearless nature, Catahoula Leopard Dogs are not aggressive to their owners or people in their family, which means they’re absolutely fine for having around children. However, due to their heritage, they can be overly aggressive to other animals, and they’re very unlikely to back down in a conflict.

This means you need to exercise caution when out and about where small animals like rabbits or cats may appear, and when around other dogs, say when you’re going for a walk around your local park. As long as you’re a firm and assertive owner, you shouldn’t have a problem being able to keep this dog under control.
