Introduction

There’s no doubt that Chihuahuas are one of the smallest dog breeds in the world, and they are iconic across all countries, typically for their big attitudes, loud yappy barks, and princess-like behaviour. However, while this may be what many of us have seen on TV, Chihuahuas are so much more than this in reality.

Modern-day Chihuahuas come in a variety of shapes and sizes, although it’s clear that the ‘apple’-head variety is most popular throughout the Western world, and they can have such varied attitudes, there’s no denying the Chihuahua is a character dog like no other.

History

Perhaps surprisingly, Chihuahuas are one of the oldest dog breeds we know about, and there are records that date their ownership as far back as 100AD, although there’s little doubt they would have looked and acted a little differently back then.

Chihuahuas certainly held a firm place in ancient Mexican culture, as they appeared in both archaeological findings and in recorded folklore, sometimes even as a terrifying force to be reckoned with! It’s suggested that every Aztec family would have owned a dog like this. Nowadays, these are certainly a common celeb’s main dog of choice.

Personality

Chihuahuas are extremely popular among households and owners that have character because of the famous personality that they have. Chihuahuas are sassy and saucy, and while extremely dedicated to their owners, they love to show off that they’re independent and their own owners.

However, proper training is needed from a young age to make sure that the Chihuahua knows its place and doesn’t get carried away and think it can get away with murder. Socialisation training is also recommended, so it doesn’t get jealous when you’re around other dogs, pets, or strangers.
