Introduction

The Chow Shepherd. Loyal. Lovely. Ready to play and ready to protect you and your family, Chow Shepherds will always hold a place in our hearts. Chow Shepherds, as the name suggests, are offspring breeds from mixing the Chinese Chow Chow and a traditional German Shepard together.

While not a super common dog, there are plenty of owners who share that a Chow Shepherd is one of the best dogs they’ve ever had, especially since they’re so easy to train and love.

History

There is surprisingly little known about where Chow Shepherds come from and where they originated, but we know they started to become popular over the last few decades, probably due to selective breeding. However, we do know a lot about the parent breeds: The Chow Chow and German Shepherds.

Chow Chows have been a prominent dog in Chinese culture for literal centuries. Researchers have even found fossils in China; that’s how far their heritage goes back. Likewise, German Shepherds have been a part of German culture since the 1800s. While they lost popularity after World War II, they quickly returned to being one of the most popular dog breeds in the world.

Personality

Due to the parent breed traits of the Chow Shepherd, they can be quite forceful and dominating dogs that love to be in charge, so it’s advised you don’t have a Chow Shepherd if you have children or small pets. This attitude also means they can be quite protective against other dogs and strangers.

,p>However, with proper, assertive training that ensures you’re the alpha in the relationship, Chow Shepherds are genuinely loving and affectionate dogs that only have your best interests at heart. Just make sure you stick with a tight weekly training schedule to keep them under control.
