Introduction

Chugs are adorable. The perfect mix between a Chihuahua and a Pug, literally, these curious balls of energy are ideal for family living and one of the most captivating of recent designer dogs. However, despite being bred as companions, Chugs are incredibly smart little pups that love learning new tricks, adore meeting and making friends with new people, and are overall just a pleasure to have around.

History

Since Chugs are such a new breed of designer dog, they’re not technically recognised as a breed because they haven’t quite reached the stage of being purebred; a title that will surely come in time. However, Chugs are officially recognised by designer dog bodies like the Designer Dog Kennel Club and the International Canine Registry.

Unfortunately, the history of Chugs has not been bright. The original Chugs appeared as a product of overbreeding, which meant that the first dogs suffered from a wide range of health problems and genetic disabilities, but these are fortunately disappearing as time goes on and breeding frequency is relaxed.

Personality

While Chugs can be pretty laid back and relaxed, there’s no denying that they don’t have a bit of a sassy, stubborn side, which undoubtedly comes from their Chihuahua heritage. Make sure you’re taking the time to play and stimulate the minds of your Chug to keep them happy. If they get bored, they’re very susceptible to getting irritable and will push the boundaries of trying to be the dominant dog in the house.

It’s also important to note that while Chugs never tend to get aggressive, they do get a bit nervous and wary around strangers, and particularly other dogs, so it’s always a good idea to socially train them from a young age, ensuring they know they have nothing to worry about! That’s the best way to keep a happy Chug!
