Introduction

Properly known as the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, these are the beautiful doggies that are famously adored by Queen Elizbeth and who is frequently seen with lots of pups running around her estates. Corgis like this have been a part of British culture for a long time, and as the years have passed, their popularity has spread around the world.

The Corgi, which literally translates as ‘dwarf dog’, are easily described as handfuls of love, and since they’ve been bred as companionship dogs for so many centuries, there are few dogs you can build a loving relationship with as well as you can with a Corgi.

History

There are clear records that show that Corgis were around in the UK as far back as the 1100s. Despite their smaller size, they were actually used for cattle driving, but how they were introduced to Wales and the rest of the UK remains a mystery. The most common story states how they were introduced by Flemish weavers that came to the country.

However, over the years the breed spread throughout the UK, and there’s no doubt they were made most famous by Queen Elizabeth II, who still has her Corgis around her nearly every hour of the day, to this day, which certainly helped the breed become as popular as it is.

Personality

Corgis are one of the best dogs you can have as a first-time dog owner, simply because they are so laid back and easy to train. They love nothing more than being around their humans and having fun, meaning they absolutely thrive when it comes to being in a family, especially with children whom they get on with so well.

Beautifully, Corgis are also incredibly intelligent so are great for learning new tricks and playing games with, which is ideal since they need so much exercise to stay healthy, which is surprising considering their smaller size.
