Introduction

Back in the day, Dandie Dinmont Terriers used to be prized Scottish working dogs, especially when it came to hunting. Despite their small size, there were fantastic hunters and known for being incredibly agile. However, nowadays Dandie Dinmont Terriers are beloved in the family, and are known for the incredible relationships they can form with children!

History

The earliest confirmed reports for Dandie Dinmont Terriers dates back to around the 1700s when a man named Sir Walter Scott wrote a novel about a man called Dandie Dinmont who owned several Mustard and Pepper Terriers, which is clearly where the name we know today comes from.

As time passed, these dogs grew in popularity, with the first UK Dinmont Terrier Club opening in 1875 and the standard for the breed set. Sadly, these dogs are fairly rare these days (with only three clubs in the UK) and are now actually registered on the Kennel Club vulnerable native breed list.

Personality

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier seems to hold the most common traits that most Terriers are known for. This includes characteristics like being very intelligent, determined, sometimes a little stubborn, but full of a lot of love nonetheless. Despite being rather on the small side, Dandie Dinmont Terriers won’t tend to back down when threatened, which can be a little tense if around other dogs or strangers.

Due to this loyal nature of the pup, Dandie Dinmont Terriers can be great around older children, but not so much younger children or other pets, so bear this in mind if you’re introducing a Dandie Dinmont Terrier to your home.
