Introduction

More commonly referred to as the French Mastiff, these dogs are wonderful pooches that make fantastic family household dogs, known for being laid back and chill with the ones they love. However, despite being expensive to buy and with only a short lifespan, it’s great to see that these are still one of the most popular dog breeds in the UK, and in other parts of the Western world.

History

French Mastiffs, as the name suggests, are one of the most traditional, and longest-standing dog breeds to originate in France, and there are reports that claim they have been a part of French culture since the 14th Century, such as the novel le Livre de Chasse, or the Book of the Hunting, which talks about the working history of these dogs.

Over the years, French Mastiffs have been used as both hunting and working dogs, as well as using their protective instincts to guard houses and farm animal herds. It wasn’t really until the mid-late 1860s when Paris held its first-ever dog show that French Mastiffs were seriously considered as being companion pets, but they remain to play this role to this day.

Personality

It’s true that French Mastiffs, like most Mastiffs, can seem a little scary and intimidating when you first lay eyes on them, but modern-day French Mastiffs are big softies at heart. While there’s no doubt these dogs still have a protective streak, especially around other dogs, you can train these dogs assertively and firmly to be more accepting of other people and pets.

With a lot of love, French Mastiffs are very affectionate dogs that are both loving and kind towards children and other pets, but you need to make sure you’re setting up clear boundaries and sticking to them. Socialisation is also recommended to ensure no problems occur throughout the doggie’s life.
