Introduction

Dorkies are tiny designer dogs with massive hearts. Bred specifically with companionship in mind, if you live in a small apartment, live alone, as an elderly couple, or you want a calm yet playful dog to have around your children, there are few dogs that fit the role better than a Dorkie.

History

Dorkies are fun hybrid breeds that cross Dachshunds, the German sausage dog, with the traditional Yorkshire Terriers, resulting in a fun and lovable bundle of joy the whole family is sure to fall in love with. These pups are actually one of the first designer dogs around, and records state they have been intentionally bred since the 1990s. However, these pups are still regarded as hybrid breeds.

That being said, the parent breeds of these dogs are both hugely popular, so there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Dorkies are going to be around for many years to come. The British Yorkshire Terrier, for example, is the 9th most popular dog in the US.

Personality

These adorable little pooches are ideal if you’re looking to bring a playful bundle of love into your life, and there’s little doubt that these dogs have some of the biggest hearts, especially when you consider how affectionate and loyal the parent breeds are known to be.

However, Dorkies demand attention, and if you leave the pup on their own for too long, they can become very anxious, and may even act out. Nevertheless, Dorkies are very easy to train, don’t require much exercise, and are pretty happy laying about the house all day, just as long as you’re nearby! Great for a first-time dog owner!
