Introduction

You only have to take one look at the Finnish Lapphund to see that it was bred to survive and thrive in cold conditions, which is why it should come as no surprise these dogs originate from the northern parts of the Arctic world in countries like Norway and Finland, which is where it gets its name.

These dogs are renowned for being one of the most hardworking dogs from these areas, as well as being insanely courageous, eager to please their owners by getting the job done, and by being fantastic companionship dogs, all at the same time!

History

There are records in and around the Finnish area that show these Finnish Lapphunds were around and with humans as far back as 7000 years ago! They were bred naturally back then to help guard humans in their settlements from wild animals and other tribes, as well as being used as working dogs to help hunt and track for food.

With such a strong bond and relationship with humans that has lasted several thousand years, it shouldn’t surprise you that even today, the human bond instinct is still very much there. However, while great dogs, Finnish Lapphunds are still fairly rare outside of their origin countries.

Personality

Due to the Finnish Lapphund’s history, these dogs are very submissive to their owners and are incredibly easy to train. All they want to do is be your friend and make you happy, which means doing what you say. However, the traits you do need to be aware of include things like not leaving your dog alone for too long where they can get destructive through chewing or barking.

They can also develop bad habits during this time, so you’re going to want to make sure you’re around a lot to satisfy that common pack instinct that’s hardwired into these dogs.
