Introduction

There’s little doubt that German Pinschers are German dogs, especially since they look like, and are often confused with, Dobermann breeds. German Pinschers were extremely valuable in terms of working dogs since they were bred to hunt and kill rats and other vermin, but since these are no longer needed, the numbers have dropped considerably.

However, while not really considered a companionship dog in the UK (currently ranked at 177/244 in the Kennel popularity list), there are still a lot of fans in Germany, and numbers in other countries are slowly rising.

History

Perhaps surprisingly, German Pinschers are a relatively new breed of dog that only started to appear in Germany through the 19th Century. They were commonly used throughout stable complexes to keep vermin levels under control but were officially recognised by the AKC in 2003, although this happened much earlier in Germany.

Personality

German Pinschers are nothing short of high-octane. Their energy levels are off the charts and if you’re not able to satisfy this itch, or you lack any kind of boundary training, these dogs can take control very quickly. That being said, if you’re willing to put the time in and ensure you’re assertive, you’ll be left with a fantastic dog that loves nothing more than being around and showing you how much they love you.

Of course, due to the background of these pups, they will have a tendency to chase small animals, especially rats and other vermin, but this can extend to birds and even cats, so be aware of this and take extra care if you already have pets!
