Introduction

German Shorthaired Pointers were (and still are) incredibly popular throughout Germany as they played a vital role in hunting and retrieving, but since World War II, the dogs have managed to find their way all over the world, including into the UK. These athletic and good-looking dogs have become solid companionship dogs over the years and seemed to be incredibly well-balanced, making them great dogs to have around the family.

History

German Shorthaired Pointers have been around and working alongside human beings for a long time, and German records date their presence as far back as the 1600s. They were originally introduced as sporting dogs due to their rapid speeds and stamina, which quickly people realised they could benefit from in hunting efforts.

However, come World War II, the numbers suffered drastically since nobody was interested in a dog that came from Germany. Yet, thanks to the efforts of a few dedicated breeders, once the taboo feelings had worn off, German Shorthaired Pointers became popular across Europe once more.

Personality

German Shorthaired Pointers are very easy to look after. They are naturally eager to please thanks to their working dog backgrounds and are fairly carefree. As long as you’re socialising and training them properly from a young age, you should never experience problems when encountering strangers or other dogs. Just make sure you remain the leader of the pack and give them lots of attention. Otherwise, their destructive, bored tendencies can start to show.
