Introduction

The German Wirehaired Pointer is a fantastic dog. Muscular and sturdy, these dogs with a working past are fairly popular companionship dogs to this day and love nothing more than getting stuck into a task and making their owners happy. Just be aware of the independent streak and pack mentality that can make this dog fairly defensive from time to time.

History

There are reports that claim the German Wirehaired Pointer originated from Germany (we mean, that’s a given), around the time of 1870 when hunters were looking for the ideal dog to assist with their hunting efforts, especially in areas of Germany that had rough, unstable ground.

Crossbreeding efforts began, and breeds like German Pointers, Pudelpointers, Stichelhaar, and several others were used, and eventually the German Wirehaired Pointer came to be. The first exports of this dog to countries like the US happen back in 1920, and now these dogs can be found around the world, although are not as common as, say, breeds like the German Shepherd.

Personality

Due to the history of German Wirehaired Pointers working alongside humans, these pups are incredibly loyal and dedicated to their families and want nothing more than to make their humans happy. However, while this dog will be warm to everyone, they tend to form a connection with one person in particular and will see them as their main person. Just make sure you’re socialising training from a young age so your pup is more accepting of strangers and other pets.
