Introduction

Grand Bleu De Gascogne dogs are by far one of the oldest and most traditional working dogs to come from France. They date all the way back to Ancient Times and have always been involved in human hunting activities because of their incredible sense of smell. While still used in hunting efforts around the world, the breed has also found its place as a popular family and companionship dog, making this the big, friendly giant of the dog world.

History

As we said above, Grand Bleu De Gascognes are one of the oldest breeds to come from France, and there is strong evidence out there that places these dogs in human history up to 1,000 years ago! Of course, as time passes and more records are created and collected, we’re left with a much more detailed sense of where these dogs came from and our relationship with them.

It’s known these dogs were popular in France throughout the 14th Century all the way through to the 18th Century, especially among royal families and the upper class. They were even introduced to George Washington from the US! However, due to the rise in designer dogs, the Grand Bleu De Gascogne are considered a rare breed.

Personality

Grand Bleu De Gascognes have very balanced, all-rounded personality types that make them lovers of both indoor and outdoor life. They are very easy-going, relaxed, and calm, and despite their giant size, they are amazing dogs to have around children. However, due to their great intelligence, these dogs can be a little difficult to train and will certainly try to push their luck like the cheeky doggies they are, so make sure you’re ready to be consistent yet firm with your training.

The last thing you need to know is that these dogs have incredibly high agility and stamina levels. They can run and play all day long and still not be tired, so you’ll need to be prepared to give them a LOT of exercise, far more than most dogs these days. Then again, if you’re an active person yourself, this shouldn’t be a problem!
