Introduction

While the Great Dane breed is clearly large in size, these perfect pooches are nothing short of being big friendly giants. A fantastic choice as family and companionship dogs, these dogs have found homes all over the world, and have been popular for literal centuries. With their playful nature, their affinity for children, and their unwavering loyalty, there are few dogs that make such great friends as the Great Dane.

History

There are records that suggest that Great Danes have been around for thousands of years, actually dating back as far as 3,000BC! This was the time the Ancient Egyptians were at their peak, and over the years as civilization spread around the world, the Great Dane went along as well.

Over the years, the Great Danes have been bred and crossed with other dogs, and have certainly changed since Egyptian times, but the original Great Dane breed still remains just as popular as ever. In the UK as of 2021, these pups currently rank as the 76th most popular dog breed in the country.

Personality

As before, Great Danes are best described as gentle giants. They are incredibly loving and affectionate and don't tend to have a malicious streak in them at all. They love nothing more than being around their humans and making them happy, and are exceptional around children, even considering their massive size.

This love for humans also ensures Great Danes are fine around strangers and even other animals, but that doesn’t mean they won’t get protective if they feel as though their owners are threatened. They certainly do have a guard dog instinct within them. Easy to train, quiet, not massive fans of barking, and very playful, these dogs could be considered as close to perfect as you’re going to get!
