Introduction

The Hamiltonstovare is a high-energy breed still used for hunting, but they also make great family pets and companions for those with active, outdoor lifestyles. They are loving and loyal and enjoy the company of children, but their natural hunting instinct can be problematic if they share a home with cats or other small animals.

History

The Hamiltonstovare is a well-known breed in Sweden but little is known about its exact origins. Bred by Count Adolf Hamilton, the general consensus is that the breed’s ancestors may have been hounds imported from other European countries, including Denmark and Germany, and some bloodlines may have originated in Scotland and England. As handsome hunting and gundogs, they remain much-prized working dogs in Sweden, but their sweet temperament has also seen them become much-loved family pets in active homes.

Personality

Energetic and intelligent, the Hamiltonstovare thrives in an outdoor, country environment with active owners. A relative “steady-Eddie” with an even temper and a sunny disposition, they are trustworthy, reliable, loyal companions that bond strongly with their people, but they need plenty of exercise every day to stay happy. A bored or under-exercised Hamiltonstovare will look for its own mischievous or destructive entertainment.

Exercise: a minimum of two hours of energetic exercise is needed each day with as much time as possible off the lead. Free time in a secure garden is also needed between walks to help ensure this breed doesn’t get bored.
