Introduction

While the Havana Brown breed is undoubtedly nothing short of elegant, sadly, they are a rare breed that many believe are endangered. A stunning mix between domestic house cats and Siamese cats, Havana Browns are incredibly beautiful cats, but while some breeding efforts exist, it will take a long time for the original Havana Brown numbers to return to where they once were.

History

Havana Browns first started to appear back in the 1950s when UK cat lovers wanted to breed a beautiful cat that was basically a dark-coloured Siamese. There were plenty of cats used, such as domestic black cats in the UK and Siamese breeds like the Russian Blue. However, after being held back by a ton of genetic issues and pressures from Siamese pure breeding groups to stop breeding, efforts slowed, and the numbers decreased massively.

With the current genetic testing we’re able to do, it seems as though there are next-to-no cats that descend from the original breeding efforts of the 1950s, despite the breed being officially recognised in countries around the world. While there are efforts to try this breed again, it seems as though everyone is starting from scratch, and it will take a few years to make progress in this area.

Personality

Havana Browns are renowned for having extremely strong connections and relationships with their humans, which is another reason why so many cat lovers are interested in this breed. Some might even say the cats can become addicted to their owners and want nothing more than to be around them.

As long as you’re spending time with your cat and you’re usually close by, this cat will be happy and talkative with you. If you work from home or are a stay-at-home parent, this cat could be absolutely ideal. Be sure to stimulate your cat with toys because they love the challenge!
