Introduction

The Ibizan Hound is an attractive, athletic-looking breed that is very popular in Spain and surrounding European regions, but as yet remains relatively unknown in other parts of the world. They are kind and loyal by nature, and make energetic companions for active, outdoor-loving families.

History

Believed to be an ancient breed, the exact origins of the Ibizan Hound remain unknown. The images of dogs found in Egyptian tombs appear very similar in appearance to today’s Ibizan Hound, leading some to conclude the breed’s descendants may have been dogs brought to the Balearic Islands by Phoenician traders some 5000 years ago.

Personality

The Ibizan Hound is an energetic breed that needs plenty of vigorous exercise to stay calm and happy at home, but they are sweet-tempered, affectionate, fun-loving, and loyal, and try very hard to please. Bred as hunters by sight, scent, and sound, training can be difficult as they are easily distracted (and they will chase cats), meaning they are not a good choice for first-time owners, but for families and individuals with active, outdoor lifestyles, the Ibizan Hound can be an ideal jogging or cycling companion.

Care Tips Ibizan hounds are relatively low maintenance, but exercise needs are high. Grooming: an occasional groom with a soft brush. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: a minimum of two hours of active exercise is needed every day for this high-energy breed. They can adapt to city living, but are happiest in a rural environment with space to run free. Secure fencing is needed in a garden because the Ibizan Hound will take advantage of any opportunity to escape.
