Introduction

One of the ancient breeds of dogs, the Japanese Shiba, is a small to medium-sized spitz dog with roots as far back as 6000-7000 BC. They continue to be popular in their home country of Japan with good levels of popularity in the rest of the world. Loyal and loving to their family unit, they can be stubborn but also aloof around those they don't know.

History

Thought to have originated between 6000 and 7000 BCE, the Japanese Shiba originally had six variations from different regions. When world war two broke out, many Japanese breed numbers, including the Japanese Shiba, fell dangerously low. The numbers recovered and then fell low again in the early 1950s due to an outbreak of distemper. Thankfully since then, numbers have bounced back, and this Japanese national treasure is unlikely to go anywhere! The oldest known Japanese Shiba was a dog named Pusuke who lived for twenty-six years, just three years left than the worlds oldest dog!

Personality

The Japanese Shiba is loyal, spirited, bold, good-natured, and alert. They can be wary and aloof of people they don't know, but they are loyal and loving to their family unit. They enjoy cleanliness, and some have been seen cleaning just as much as some cats. Due to this cleanliness, some Japanese Shiba puppies have been known to housebreak themselves. If this isn't the case, they are still easy to housebreak. They are easily trainable and can be taught a variety of tricks; however, keeping them focused on the training schedule can be difficult.
