Introduction

If you could sum up a King Charles Spaniel in two key traits, it’d be sporty and affectionate.

These charming dogs are highly companionable and would never turn down a pat or the opportunity to curl up with you on the sofa.

But, when they’re not getting a fuss, their second favourite thing to do is to be outside and active. They are super sporty dogs that make a great companion for keen runners or hikers.

This loving breed - with their intuitiveness and caring nature - also make for wonderful therapy dogs. They’re much-loved across the UK for their sweet personalities, lustrous fluffy coats, and their gorgeous, deep round eyes.

Did you know? These spaniels are almost always wagging their tails, especially when they’re spending time outside.

History

The breed got its namesake from the king of England Charles II. In fact, he almost always had a little King Charles Spaniels by his side when he was out on royal duty.

During this time, spaniels were particularly popular amongst wealthier families, and members of royalty. These spaniel traits can still be seen in today’s King Charles Spaniels, who have never lost their love of chasing and retrieving.

Personality

King Charles Spaniels are sweet, caring and loving. They are highly doting, and are at their happiest when by their owner’s side. This does mean that they develop very strong attachments, but also that they are highly dependent on humans and affection. As a result, it would be unfair to leave them alone for an extended period of time.

They are sociable creatures through and through. As a result, they often get on very happily with another pet in the house (including other dogs, as well as cats), but it would be wise to be cautious if you have a bird or a smaller pet (like a hamster) in your home).
