Introduction

Komondors thrive in the great outdoors. They delight in being able to roam about, walk, run and play in the fresh air, with their owner by their side.

Having been originally bred to be working dogs, they have retained this lively, energetic spirit. As a result, although they aren’t a good fit for anyone living in a flat or a city without access to green space, they make a wonderful pal for anyone who shares this love of nature.

Komondors are distinctive for a number of key reasons - not only do they have a brilliant mop of long white fur, this breed is also known for its remarkable intelligence and ability to learn at an impressive pace.

Did you know? An owner of a Komondor needs to be particularly confident, as they can be tricky to handle. By introducing Komondors to the world around them - lots of intriguing places, different smells and new people - as puppies, they will be far more likely to behave better as adults.

History

The breed has a long history of farm life and plenty of hard work. It was used as a guard dog, protecting livestock for farmers.

They come from Hungary, and originate from sheepdogs. In fact, Komondors in Hungary can be traced all the way back to the 1500s.

Interestingly, the Komondors made for especially effective guard dogs of sheep because they could blend in to the herd. This made them brilliant at catching out predators.

Personality

Owning a Komondor is a highly rewarding experience. They are loving, loyal and sociable - this caring breed is predisposed to form strong attachments to their owners.

However, with these benefits come a few difficulties, which can make them a difficult breed for first-time dog owners. This is because Komondors have a tendency to show aggression, particularly towards other dogs.

Their history as watch dogs means that they are inherently protective. This can cause them to bark and defend if they see a threat (even if you know that there is nothing for them to be afraid of).
