Introduction

Lhasa Apsos are immediately recognisable for their long, sweeping glossy coat. These sweet pups are ready to strut their stuff at any time of day - Lhasa Apsos are always catwalk ready.

They may be little, but Lhasa Apsos are confident, strong willed and proudly independent.

The great thing about Lhasa Apsos is that they bring brains as well as beauty. These intelligent pups are particularly smart, and they also feel very confident on their own, too. But, don’t think for a second that they’re immune to affection. Lhasa Apsos adore a cuddle and they make absolutely devoted pets.

Did you know? In dog circles, Lhasa Apsos are well-known for their firm sense of independence. They very much like to do things their way (rather than some breeds of dog that will absolutely hang off your every word). Although you will be able to train your Lhasa Apso, don’t go into the puppy classes thinking that you’re going to come out with the classes’ gold medal - it probably isn’t realistic.

History

As you may expect from such a proud pup, Lhasa Apsos have a rich and intriguing history.

Lhasa Apsos originate from Tibet and get their namesake from the country’s holy city, Lhasa.

In fact, the history of Lhasa Apsos’ presence in Tibet can be traced all the way back to 800 B.C. Throughout these many centuries, Lhasa Apsos were used as guard dogs, where they protected important places like monasteries, temples and royal property.

In fact, throughout their history of working in Tibet, Lhasa Apsos were believed to not only be lucky, but sacred creatures, too.

Personality

You may not expect it from such a little dog, but few breeds can compete with the protective nature of Lhasa Apsos. These pups have protecting and defending hard-wired in their ancestry and, just because your home isn’t an ancient monastery, that doesn’t mean they’ll be any less determined to protect it.

Lhasa Apsos also have a wonderfully playful nature. They are always delighted by the chance to play with you, and those deep brown eyes are often twinkling with a little hint of mischief. In fact, many Lhasa Apso owners say that their puppy can remain in the same puppy-like nature for a number of years. One thing’s for sure, your house will never be short of fun.
