Introduction

Daunting in size and appearance, these huge dogs can be quite fearsome and intimidating so it might come as something of a surprise to learn that they love the home environment and are generally calm and tranquil pets.

Mastiffs can form very strong human bonds but do require some prior dog ownership knowledge as there are some specialist elements to managing such a big dog.

History

If you are looking for a breed of dog reputed to be one of the oldest on the planet then a Mastiff must come near the top of the list. They used to be even bigger than they are now as evidenced by records from the 15th century and are thought to have originated from Asia.

They have historically been used as a guard dog but if you don’t have any ancient Babylonian sculptures then you can still enjoy the gentle protective tendencies of this giant breed. The Romans found the breed in Britain and took the dogs back to Italy with them to use for guarding and hunting. Their popularity has waxed and waned over the centuries with the lowest point in terms of numbers in the UK just after the Second World War when there were only 14 Mastiffs reputedly left in the UK. They are a breed on the rise in popularity in Britain but are little known outside these shores.

Personality

Mastiffs can look daunting even to other dog owners because they are just so large but underneath that huge frame lies a gentle and loving dog. However, due to their size, Mastiffs can take quite specialist handling and need experienced owners who can provide them with enough mental stimulation and physical exercise. They are a breed that is prone to putting on weight so they need quite a careful home regime to keep them healthy both mentally and physically.
