Introduction

Part of the Poodle family, the Miniature Poodle is a lot larger than Toy Poodles but smaller than the giant Standard Poodle. There is no doubt about it, the Miniature Poodle has a charming character and they are an enduringly popular breed.

For allergies sufferers, this breed is an excellent choice as they don’t shed the pet dander which can cause so many problems within the home for those sensitive to animal hair and dust. Miniature Poodles form strong bonds with their owners and like a busy environment where they are part of the family.

History

The Miniature Poodle is part of the Poodle family and has historic antecedents which date back as far as ancient Egypt where the breed is represented in drawings. The general consensus of opinion is that the breed originated in Germany and by the 14th century, breeders were beginning to develop smaller versions of the Poodle.

Early poodles were used to retrieve waterfowl on the hunting field. The ability to fashion and shape the coat was understood at a very early time and the dogs were used in circuses and by travelling performers because of the way they could be made to look. This styling was copied by the nobility which gave the Poodle immense status and cachet.

The Miniature Poodle was developed as its own breed in the 1950s, a reflection of the popularity of the dog in the UK and also to make them easy to manage – smaller dogs equal less coat care.

Personality

The Miniature Poodle has a sharp bright temperament, a nod to its working origins but is probably popular because of its kind temperament – they make the perfect family pet. Easy to train, they are tractable and will adapt well to lots of different living environments.
