Introduction

The Newfoundland is a big dog with a huge heart, a sweet and kind nature which makes this the perfect breed for a family pet. Originally a working dog, they are tractable and sociable and are quite happy to have family time as long as they have enough space to exercise. Protective of children without being unduly aggressive or territorial, they are also good with other dogs and pets. The Newfoundland is perhaps most memorably captured in the character ‘Nana’ in Peter Pan.

History

The Newfoundland bears its country of origin with pride although its very early origins are not known. The earliest records of the breed are from the 18th century and the popularity of the Newfoundland waxed and waned with near extinction a real possibility at one point.

The dogs hit a high point in the 1880s and were used for all types of work including dragging fishing nets and timber from the forests. They are still used today in a working capacity but in different roles as rescue dogs and lifeguards.

Personality

Don’t be put off by the size of the Newfoundland, they really are the sweetest and soppiest dogs imaginable with a real desire to nurture and protect the humans around them. Their personalities are without question but Newfoundlands do take a bit of looking after.

Their long, dense coats tend to hold the dirt and if there was an Olympic sport of dribbling and drooling then they would win gold every time. However, they don’t require huge amounts of exercise despite the fact that they are originally a working breed. They are quite laid back and lack the inner dynamo of some other workers like sheepdogs.
