Introduction

The Parson Russell Terrier is a UK native originating in the West Country. They were originally bred to work alongside Foxhounds but nowadays have a firm role in family life. Just think how many television advertisements use this cheeky and naughty breed to showcase their products.

They are full of beans and character and also pretty naughty which is what makes them so endearing. Fearless and totally unaware of their size, they are happy to join in with anything and anyone and are also popular therapy dogs.

History

The Parson Russell Terrier is named after Parson John Russell, a West Country Vicar who was a keen fox hunter and wanted to breed a small dog for badger digging. The breed was then adopted by foxhunters and used to dig out foxes that had been hunted and gone to ground.

The Parson Russell Terrier was not recognised by the Kennel Club until 1990 due to the great variation within the breed. It was first registered as the Parson Jack Russell Terrier before a name change later on to the Parson Russell Terrier.

There is a rival group in the UK that is not affiliated to the Kennel Club which is called the Jack Russell Terrier Club of Great Britain and is said to promote the breed as a working dog.

Personality

You couldn’t find a jollier dog than the Parson Russell Terrier. This breed has an enthusiasm for life regardless of environment or activity and is an ideal dog for children as they will play for hours. Positive boundaries and rules are crucial. They do require quite a lot of exercise to keep their busy personalities in check.

Portable and fearless, the Parson Russell Terrier is an intelligent breed and can be quite selective about the commands it wants to follow. This can be frustrating for owners but is all part of that cheeky independent character.
