Introduction

Possibly the oldest breed in the world, the Pharaoh is an elegant and classic dog characterised by a very friendly and loyal temperament. Now the national dog of Malta, they have a lineage that stretches back over 5,000 years and was said to be the hunting companions of the ancient Kings of Egypt.

Intelligent and affectionate, Pharaohs love human company and interaction and will be your friend for life. This is said to be a breed that blushes when it is happy, a rose colour will appear on the nose and ears.

History

There is no doubting the roots of this aristocratic and ancient breed, their presence has been confirmed in hieroglyphs in the tombs of Ancient Egypt but there is little detail about them in the intervening centuries.

Introduced to Malta by the Phoenicians in 1,000 BC they are now the national dog of the Maltese, prized by farmers throughout the centuries for their fantastic hunting prowess. The breed first appeared in the UK in the 1960s when an English lady living in Malta brought one dog with her. She was called Pauline Block and became the first breeder of Pharaoh Hounds in the UK. Despite their royal ancestry, Pharaohs are still a fairly rare sight in the UK with limited availability.

Personality

The Pharaoh Hound is an independent breed but does form an extremely strong bond with its owner. They are very sociable but are high energy so take plenty of exercise. They also have a low boredom threshold so lots of mental stimulation is essential. Perfect for a busy household with plenty of space, this is not perhaps the most suitable breed for a new dog owner.
