Introduction

No guessing what the job of these little guys is, vermin control or ratting was their raison d’etre. They are an American breed developed during the 20th century for vermin control on farms and were intended to be a multi-purpose dog for vermin both above and below ground and small quarry like rabbits.

The Rat Terrier became popular because of its usefulness and endearing disposition. Favoured by the American President, Theodore Roosevelt, they were nicknamed, ‘Teddy’s Terriers’ and resided in The White House during his term of office. Their size and appearance can vary quite widely.

History

The Rat Terrier evolved in the States in the 1800s using different breeds from Europe and England like the Fox Terrier, Bull Terrier, Manchester Terrier plus some influence from Whippets and Beagles to produce a keen, sharp, fast dog with a great nose and good temperament.

Popular during the 19th century, their numbers began to decline as people moved away from farming communities and into the cities during the 20th century. The breed was not recognised until as recently as 1999 by the United Kennel Club.

Personality

A cheerful, confident and happy breed, the Rat Terrier is adaptable, interested and loves engaging with humans. The breed has alertness and versatility which makes them suitable for many different home environments and lifestyles.

The Rat Terrier is intelligent so reasonably easy to train but does need plenty of interest and mental stimulation to avoid boredom which could lead to unwanted behaviour. For this reason, they make great family pets in a busy household full of children and like nothing better than getting involved in lots of fun activities.
