Introduction

The Sheepadoodle is the result of a first cross between two of the nations’ most beloved, breeds, the Old English Sheepdog and the Poodle. This fusion of classic English pastoral breeding with an intelligent German gundog has created a lovely crossbreed and if it does have any disadvantages at all, it could be said that this breed is just a little heavy on the grooming.

Don’t confuse this hybrid with the Shepadoodle which a cross between the Poodle and the German Shepherd. Despite their coats, the Sheepadoodle is a good choice of dog for allergy sufferers as the breed is considered to be a low-shedder.

History

The Sheepadoodle combines two very popular and cherished breeds, the pastoral guardianship of the sheepdog and the sharp, retrieving intelligence of the Poodle. First bred around forty years ago, the Sheepadoodle is one of the older designer hybrids and was said to have evolved in response to the increasing numbers of allergy sufferers and the driver to create hypoallergenic dogs.

Both founding breeds have long and illustrious pasts and have been quite high profile in different parts of the world. Both the Old English Sheepdog and the Poodle have kind and tractable natures, they are adaptable and generally, both breeds complement each other well and make for a very good mix. For reasons of size, the Old English Sheepdog should only be bred with a Standard Poodle rather than the Toy Poodle or the Miniature.

Personality

Smart, playful and loving, this is one designer hybrid crossbreed that is proving a huge success, creating a happy dog that is suitable for a variety of different homes. Generally good with children, the Sheepadoodle’s trainability may vary depending on which parent they take after; Poodles are famously trainable but the Old English Sheepdog can be very independently minded.
