The Slough is a sighthound with ancient antecedents originally from North Africa and a breed that dates back as far as the Middle Ages. A Bedouin dog, they are highly prized and valued and their passing is mourned with the same respect and reverence as that accorded to a member of the tribe.

Fantastic hunters, the Sloughi has been prized and valued for centuries for their elegant looks, their fantastic turn of speed and their hunting prowess.

Modern technology and genetic testing have revealed that the Sloughi are more closely related to the Afghan Hound than the Saluki. Some theories suggest that they may have originated in Saudi Arabia.

Ancient coins discovered in Mesopotamia have revealed very similar looking dogs around four to five thousand years ago. Also, wall paintings in the ancient Egyptian tombs have depicted close representations of this breed sitting under their master’s thrones.

The breed arrived in Europe over one hundred years ago but was not known in the UK until the later years of the 20th century. Still rare, puppies command high prices and there will usually be a lengthy waiting list.

A sensitive dog, the Sloughi forms a strong bond with its owner. An intelligent breed, they are reasonably specialist to manage and would suit an owner who has had experience of this type of dog before. They have a strong prey drive due to their working antecedents so are better suited to a home without any other small pets and require a reasonable level of exercise.
