Introduction

With its striking tabby coat and long legs, the Sokoke is an energetic and friendly cat that is known to be fond of climbing – and chatting. As one of the rarest cat breeds, anyone fortunate enough to own one can consider themselves extremely lucky.

History

Developed from a feral landrace breed known as khadzonzo in Kenya, the Sokoke is a relatively new cat breed that first appeared in the late 1970s. Sharing its origins with an Arabian wildcat and an Asian domesticated cat, the Sokoke breed has maintained a “wild-looking” appearance, but is now becoming a much-sought after companion cat and family pet that is known to form strong bonds with its people.

Personality

Although friendly and known to form an almost dog-like, loyal, and life-long attachment to their people, the Sokoke is not a cuddly cat that enjoys snuggling up on a lap. They thrive on human companionship, but choose to remain slightly aloof, staying close by instead of allowing themselves to be picked up. They are active, athletic cats that love to climb, but they are well-suited to indoor life, provided they are given plenty of attention and stimulation, as they have very fine coats and prefer to stay in the warmth.
