Introduction

A small dog developed around the around the first world war the Sporting Lucas Terrier is a compact yet intelligent dog. Originally bred from the Lucas Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier this handsome dog was designed in the hopes of creating an improved Terrier dog. Although not formally recognised by kennel clubs these dogs are well loved and make fantastic companions for those of an athletic disposition.

History

Developed in the 1990s in Scotland the Sporting Lucas Terrier and is a cross between the Lucas Terrier, the Jack Russell Terrier, and various Fell Terriers breeds. The father of the breed is one Brian Plumber who was interested in making a “good working terrier”. Those in the Lucas Terrier clubs de listed the dogs bred by Brian Plumber as they did not want the bloodlines to mix and introduce “impurities” into the pedigree breeds. While not recognised by many pedigree groups they are recognised by the United Kennel club in their Terrier groups.

Personality

Friendly and people pleasing this handsome breed is extraverted, however it can be shy when meeting new people for the first time. To combat this and to keep them confident they must be socialised to new people and situations from an early age. They get on well with younger and older children and their size means there is not a huge risk of injury, however they should still be supervised. As a curious and intelligent dog the Sporting Lucas Terrier can be taught a wide variety of tricks and commands. Individuals of this breed may well excel in canine sporting competitions.
